HealthMy name is María López and I am the mother of Jesús Moreno, a young man of just 15. I never imagined I would have to write these words to ask for help.
Until recently, my son was a teenager full of dreams. He liked to study, play, go out with his friends, and talk about everything he wanted to do when he grew up. Our life was simple, but we were happy.
Everything changed in a matter of seconds.
A terrible accident nearly took my son away from me forever. For hours, doctors fought to save his life. Thank God he survived, but the consequences were devastating.
Jesús lost one of his eyes and also suffered a severe brain injury that caused him to lose part of his brain. Since that day, our life has never been the same.
Today my son faces challenges no child should ever have to live through.
The neurological aftereffects have caused him to gradually lose mobility. There are days when it's hard for him to walk, hold objects, and even carry out simple tasks. Doctors explained that he needs medication permanently, intensive physical therapy, specialized appointments, and constant rehabilitation to keep him from losing more function and mobility.
As if this weren't enough, the one eye he has left is also losing vision because of the accident's effects. He urgently needs special glasses to try to preserve the little vision he still has.
But what breaks my heart most is not only the physical aftereffects.
It's seeing the enormous emotional suffering my son is going through.
Jesús needs a prosthetic eye, which costs $8,500. That prosthesis won't give him back his sight, but it can give him back something he lost the day of the accident: his self-esteem.
Since he went back to school, his life became a nightmare.
He has been the victim of mockery, insults, and bullying. Some classmates laugh at his face, make cruel comments, and point him out as if he were different. The cheerful boy who always smiled now avoids looking at people.
He no longer wants to leave the house.
He no longer wants to get together with his friends.
He almost never smiles.
I often find him crying alone in his room, asking me why this had to happen to him. As a mother, there is no greater pain than watching your child lose the will to live while you can do nothing to ease his suffering.
Doctors are also worried about his emotional state. The isolation, shame, and rejection he lives with every day are pushing him into depression.
Meanwhile, expenses keep rising.
Besides the prosthetic eye, we must buy the special glasses to protect the vision he still has, pay for ongoing medication, physical therapy, medical appointments, tests, transportation to treatments, and cover our household's basic needs. Since the accident, I have had to devote my life entirely to caring for Jesús and I can no longer work as before.
For all these reasons, our goal is to raise $25,000, an amount that will let us cover the prosthetic eye, the special glasses, medications, rehabilitation, therapies, and the basic expenses we need to keep fighting for my son's recovery.
I never imagined I would have to ask for help from people I don't know.
But today I set aside all pride because my son's health, dignity, and future are worth far more than any embarrassment.
If you can make a donation, you won't just be helping pay for a treatment.
You will be giving hope back to a 15-year-old boy who dreams of feeling accepted again, keeping the vision he has left, regaining some of his mobility, and smiling again without fear.
If you cannot help financially right now, I ask you with all my heart to share our story. A simple gesture can reach the right person and completely change my son's future.
May God bless your life and your family's for taking a few minutes to learn Jesús Moreno's story.
With all my love and eternal gratitude,
María López
Jesús Moreno's Mother
